Youth Act was the bomb !!

Abi, Brandon, Kynie, Byron and Devon are The Visionaires Youth Forum, concerned about Teenage Pregnancy. Joining the Youth Act programme in Autumn 2004 the Visionaires became aware of one of the biggest issues that many young people in Southwark and Lambeth face: Teenage Pregnancy. They wanted to make the public, particularly young men, more aware of teenage pregnancy issues: including prevention, support during pregnancy and once the child has been born. Living in Lambeth and Southwark which are the boroughs with some of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy in Europe, the guys decided to take the following steps to explore this issue and try to make a change to the lives of young people around them. They:

*Conducted research into teenage pregnancy locally and nationally, looking at all the aspects that affected young men and women

*Identified local Lambeth/Southwark based individuals and organisations concerned with teenage pregnancy (potential allies)

*Decided to target youth groups/centres, colleges and schools

Put together a list of six youth groups in Southwark and volunteered to contact and work on one each

*Designed a schools survey and presentations which they plan to adapt to be carried out in a youth group environment.

The group have also been active in Youth Act in other ways. Brandon was invited to the Lambeth Youth Council. He has become part of the Camelot 4Front Awards young peoples design team. And with Daniela of the Engage Youth Act group, he co-hosted Youth Act participants, adults, their families, supporters and friends with his great skills as MC at the Youth Act Celebration event on June 30th 2005.. Brandon believes that:

Youth Act has been a great experience that changes you for the better. When you do something for a friend its a favour when you do something for the community it's life changing.
