Citizenship Foundation adopts Giving Nation, leading youth charity programme

The Citizenship Foundation is delighted to welcome Giving Nation as one of its projects with effect from today [1 April].

Created by The Giving Campaign in 2002, Giving Nation is an independent national initiative that celebrates the power of young people, encouraging them to reshape their world through giving to others.

Thanks to new funding from the Home Office and the Department for Education and Skills, Giving Nation will become a key part of the Citizenship Foundation’s work.

At the forefront of citizenship education in the UK, the Citizenship Foundation shares with Giving Nation a commitment to developing young people’s awareness and understanding of the issues that shape their lives, and empowering them with the skills to effect change.

In its first year Giving Nation reached over half of all secondary schools across the UK and more than 400 of those took part in the first ever G-Week (in 2003).

The schools-based programme was designed to support the teaching of the citizenship curriculum, providing teachers with free resources that promote charitable activity, decision-making and reflection.  Giving Nation is now one of the Citizenship Foundation’s growing range of excellent resources supporting education for citizenship in schools and beyond.

Tony Breslin, Chief Executive of the Citizenship Foundation, says:

“All of us at the Citizenship Foundation are thrilled to have the opportunity and responsibility to take forward Giving Nation, already established as the definitive charity resource for secondary schools. Giving Nation will further enhance our reach across the citizenship education field and we are confident that it will go from strength to strength in its new home.”

Andy Thornton, Project Manager for Giving Nation, comments:

"We are delighted about joining The Citizenship Foundation and by taking us under their wing, they are recognising the important role that Giving Nation has to play in education for citizenship. The Citizenship Foundation has been a vanguard for promoting the importance of citizenship to a new generation and we are further pleased that this new move highlights the recognition of the historical role of charities and community action in building a fair and inclusive society."
