Cabinet Minister calls for greater public role in Parliament

In an interview with The Times today, Peter Hain, the Leader of the Commons, said the public should have the opportunity directly to influence Parliamentary debate.

'Parliament is too distant from the people,' he was reported as saying.

'This is creating a crisis of democratic legitimacy in politics.'

The article conveys Mr Hain's desire, as as Chair of the Commons' Modernisation Committee, to 'take Westminster politics out of Westminster and into the country'.

His aim is to make the Commons once more the focus of politics, and not the media, The Times reports.

'The first part,' quotes the paper, 'is actually to find out what people think.' Share
