Citizenship handbook empowers newcomers to UK
Newcomers to Britain should have access to essential and practical information that will support their effective participation in UK society, says the Citizenship Foundation. The Foundation welcomes the reports recommendation that newcomers to Britain should have access to essential and practical information about our education, health and legal systems and about the process of government in the UK. We believe that this will support the effective participation of newcomers in UK society. Everyone, irrespective of age or origin, is entitled to understand their rights and responsibilities within society and be empowered with the skills to take part fully. There are clear links between these proposals and the reasons behind the Citizenship curriculum for 11-16 year olds, which became statutory in England in September 2002.
