Importance of citizenship education in Europe ratified

At a conference in Strasbourg last week, Ted Huddleston presented the Council of Europe's draft document on teacher training.

The document is intended to raise awareness among policy-makers in member states of the need for teacher training in Education for Democratic Change and Human Rights Eeucation, and the implications for policy and practice.

Ted, in partnership with a number of European colleagues, is now drawing up a list of practical recommendations and illustrative case studies.

The conference ratified the importance of this area in the development of citizenship education on a European-wide basis and will be making its own recommendations for future CoE development work and policy and issuing a conference report in due course.

Forty four countries were represented at the conference, which was held in Strasbourg from 15-17 June 2005.
