International teams to clash in mock trials

Two English schools are to pit their wits against overseas mock trial teams; one against Ireland, and the other against Australia via video link.

Colyton Grammar School, winner of the Bar National Mock Trial Competition 2004/05, will play against St Joseph's School from Ireland on 29 April.

St Joseph's are the winners of a mock trial competition run during what is called a 'transition year' in Ireland, when students are about 15 years of age. This is an optional year during which there is no formal education, and instead students get involved in business and charity projects.

The Boswell's School, runner-up in the Bar National Mock Trial Competition, will play against Merewether High from Australia on 3 May.

Merewether High won the mock trial competition run by the Law Society of New South Wales, which involved aound 340 schools.

Judging the trials will be Bernard Richmond for England vs Ireland, and Lord Justice Hooper for England vs Australia.

This year's video link with Australia has been made possible by funding from the Department for Constitutional Affairs.
