Foundation pays tribute to Blunkett

The Citizenship Foundation has paid tribute to David Blunkett for his role as Education Secretary in placing citizenship education at the centre of educational practice and political debate.

It has also paid tribute to his continued commitment as Home Secretary to themes such as civil renewal, active citizenship and the educational needs of newcomers to Britain, most recently in evidence in yesterday's publication of Life in the United Kingdom: a journey to citizenship, on which the Citizenship Foundation provided much of the detailed and practical information.

Chairman Michael Maclay remarked: "All of us in the citizenship education community owe an enormous debt to David Blunkett. The fact that Citizenship is now a foundation subject of the National Curriculum is largely due to his drive and vision while Secretary of State for Education. His championing of this initiative, with all-party support, will be an important and enduring legacy of his time in government”.
